Sandwiched between an ABC store and an aloha shirt-souvenir shop, a new building is going up on Kalakaua Avenue that also hopes to attract tourists, but not to buy trinkets and sunscreen. Instead the new edifice will “sell” an education on Hawaii’s two saints and Molokai’s Kalaupapa peninsula to visitors and locals alike.The two-story Damien and Marianne of Molokai Education Center fills a narrow space fronting St. Augustine Church property.

More than just young at heart

John Arruda, 95, accepted and overcame the heavy price of Hansen’s disease to live a long, fulfilling life. From a bench on the old sampan idling in the bay, John Arruda stared at what was about to become his new home: the Kalaupapa peninsula. It was the summer of 1945. He was 21 years old and alone.

May is the month of St. Damien

In May we celebrate our Blessed Mother and our earthly mother. But it is also a time to celebrate our beloved St. Damien de Veuster, whose feast day is May 10. This year marks the 155th anniversary of the arrival of this great saint to Hawaii. Since the canonization in Rome of St. Damien 10 years ago, many have been drawn to Molokai to walk in his footsteps. One young man in particular first learned about the work of this devoted priest while attending Mass on Maui when visiting his grandparents some 15 years ago.
